Scrappy Bear Tracks

Ooohhh scrappy quilts. I will forever love them. And Jodie of @jozmakesquilts is a pro at making her quilts scrappy yet cohesive. And she also has been kind enough to write a guest blog post for me on how to turn the Bear Track quilt block tutorial (from my BOM for newsletter subscribers!) (UPDATED: you can find the pattern here) into a nice and roomy throw!

Hi everyone! My name is Jodie (@jozmakesquilts)  and I love quilting- so much so that I started a little fabric shop last year - Scribbly Gum Quilt Co. Fat quarter quilts are my absolute favourite so I’m here today to talk through how to make your Penelope Handmade Block of the Month Bear Track quilt block fat quarter friendly (and extra scrappy!) 

The fabric and cutting requirements will make a quilt that is 6 x 6 of the “quarter" bear track blocks or 3 x 3 of the “full” bear claw blocks- which gives you a lovely generous throw size which is 72” square.

 

 

So let’s get started!


You will need: 

Colours: 

• 14 fat quarters • To make it super scrappy you can use a combination of colours and prints 

Low Volume: 

• 12 fat quarters (I’ve got some kits available to make the pictured quilt just in case- you can find them here) 

Cutting instructions:


Colour fat quarters:
Divide your colour fat quarters into two piles-  

• one pile with 8 fat quarters  

• one pile with 6 fat quarters

For the pile with 8 fat quarters, cut each fat quarter as follows:

For the pile with 6 fat quarters, cut each fat quarter as follows:

Low volume fat quarters 

Divide your low volume fat quarters into two piles: 

• one pile with 9 fat quarters  

• one pile with 3 quarters


For the pile with 9 fat quarters, cut each fat quarter as follows:

For the pile with 3 fat quarters, cut each fat quarter as follows (NB: This gives you some extra squares for you to play around with):
